Pan-United Corporation Ltd has unveiled Singapore’s first electric concrete mixer truck, underlining its commitment to sustainability. This introduction marks a milestone in Pan-United’s journey to become a carbon-neutral ready-mix concrete company by 2050.

\n\n

Using an electric-powered mixer truck will reduce the carbon footprint of transporting ready-mix concrete by 45% compared to a fuel-powered truck, according to Pan-United. Moreover, using electric vehicles (EVs) in a highly dense urban environment like Singapore can reduce noise pollution significantly.

\n\n

“We hope to eventually operate a substantial fleet of electric concrete mixer trucks for our day-to-day operations,” said Ken Loh, CEO of Pan-United. “This step marks an exciting new venture in exploring alternative fuel technology and a deepening commitment to accomplish Pan-United’s aim of being a carbon-neutral ready-mix concrete company by 2050.”

\n\n

He added, “Pan-United has actively been exploring ways to reduce our embodied and operational carbon emissions. This includes the use of alternative fuels and electric gensets in our operations to lower our carbon footprint. We will continue to actively explore new and innovative solutions and products to decarbonise and accelerate the global climate transition.”

\n\n

Pan-United took delivery of the truck from Chinese equipment manufacturer Sany. This electric-powered truck has a sizeable 350 kWh battery, which serves up to 360 kW at peak power, and takes two hours to achieve a full charge. For comparison, a typical Category A passenger EV with a battery capacity of 78 kW takes roughly half an hour to charge fully.

One of Hong Kong’s largest developers, Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited (SHKP), has purchased nine units of electric construction equipment to replace their diesel counterparts. This major step towards decarbonisation aims to set an example for the construction industry, and also supports the Hong Kong government’s Climate Action Plan 2050, which envisions ‘Zero-carbon Emissions ‧ Liveable City ‧ Sustainable Development.’

\n\n

“SHKP has committed substantial resources to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable development. Electrification on construction sites is an important component of the group’s carbon-reduction strategy,” said Adam Kwok, executive director at SHKP. “Through the procurement of nine units of electric construction equipment, we strive to create a ‘triple-win’ scenario benefitting the environment, the industry, and our construction workers. Our collective efforts will contribute to making Hong Kong a greener, low-carbon city.”

\n\n

According to Mr Kwok, this shift to electric power is estimated to lead to an annual reduction of approximately 240 t of carbon emissions, equivalent to planting over 10,000 trees. He hoped that the move would encourage other industry players to use more green building equipment. He also noted that the use of electric equipment eliminates diesel combustion, effectively reducing emissions and noise levels on construction sites, and would provide frontline workers with a cleaner and healthier work environment.

\n\n

The nine electric machines acquired by SHKP consist of five truck cranes, two truck mixers and two trailer pumps, all manufactured by Sany Group. Some of the machines have been deployed on SHKP projects, including the mega project at Sai Sha near Ma On Shan, the Hong Kong Business Aviation Centre in-situ expansion, and the projects in Kwu Tung and So Kwun Wat.

\n\n

SHKP is currently implementing its green initiatives across five major areas of construction:

\n\n

1). Adopting green smart technologies
\nSHKP’s projects adopt green smart technologies from design and construction to facility management. These technologies include: modular integrated construction (MiC), multi-trade integrated mechanical, electrical & plumbing (MiMEP), design for manufacture and assembly (DfMA), Internet of Things (IoT), and building information modelling (BIM).

\n\n

2). Developing green energy infrastructure
\nSHKP is building one of Hong Kong’s largest solar energy networks. Nearly 15,000 solar panels had been installed by the end of last year across various locations, totalling an area of approximately 400,000 sq ft. This extensive network is expected to result in an annual reduction of approximately 2,700 t of carbon emissions. In addition, the group has installed battery energy storage systems on construction sites to power electric machinery.

\n\n

3). Research and innovation in green building technologies
\nThrough collaboration with enterprises, universities and research institutions, SHKP aims to enhance the efficiency and scale of emissions reduction. The group has partnered with The Hong Kong Polytechnic University to conduct research in three areas: green applications, green building materials and green construction processes. The research on the injection of carbon dioxide into concrete is anticipated to yield results in 2025.

\n\n

4). Supply of green building materials
\nSHKP’s subsidiary, Glorious Concrete, is providing the industry with low-carbon, ready-mixed concrete with CIC Green Product Certification. This includes four types of Platinum-grade ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) concrete.

\n\n

5). Training green building talent
\nSHKP has established Sanfield Construction Innovations Limited, a company comprised of experienced engineers and professionals specialising in information technology and digital transformation. It takes a leading role in advocating for the adoption of environment-friendly and energy efficient technologies.

\n\n

Looking ahead, SHKP said it will continue to invest in green construction and purchase more equipment that uses clean energy sources to help Hong Kong transform into a greener, low-carbon city.

The new Betomix and Mobilmix concrete mixing plant series from Liebherr can be built entirely using a modular system. Customers benefit from a greater range of configuration options, shorter lead times, faster assembly and high parts availability. In addition, these plants are more environment-friendly.

\n\n

According to Liebherr, the new generation of plants requires up to 30% less energy than the previous versions, and the necessary electricity supply can also be reduced. This is achieved by frequency converters for the drives on the mixer and skip; power peaks can be avoided. Wear on mechanical parts is considerably reduced due to smooth starting and stopping processes for the drives.

\n\n

Furthermore, thanks to the frequency converter, the speed of the twin-shaft mixer can be changed during the mixing process and adapted to the recipe. The lower energy requirement over the entire service life of the mixing plant constitutes an enormous contribution to environmental protection.

\n\n

The biggest factor in improving environmental protection is the cement, revealed Liebherr. The frequency converters enable an accuracy of +/- 0.5% when metering cement. With a typical recipe featuring 300 kg of cement per cubic metre of concrete, up to 7.5 kg of cement can be saved. For example, with an annual output of 50,000 cu m of concrete, this corresponds to savings of 375 t of cement per year. Cement production has a global warming potential of 587 kg per tonne. According to this calculation, the new generation of mixing plants from Liebherr can save up to 220 t of CO2 per year.

\n\n

Electric concrete truck mixers

\n\n

Liebherr’s ETM truck mixer series with electric drum drive allows concrete to be unloaded at the construction site with zero local emissions. Customers can choose from a number of different concepts: the hybrid version on a chassis with a conventional diesel drive, the fully electric version, or as a semitrailer with any tractor unit.

\n\n

For the hybrid version, the ETM concrete truck mixers can be combined with a conventional diesel chassis. This means the journey to and from the jobsite is made with a diesel engine. On site, a battery-powered rotating drum is used for mixing, unloading and waiting periods. The battery is charged during the outward and return journey using a smart charging system.

\n\n

On average delivery trips, it is not necessary to charge the vehicle at a charging station, said Liebherr. Compared to conventional concrete mixers, it is possible to reduce fuel consumption by up to 30% with the ETM series, thereby cutting CO2 emissions by 30% as well. Noise levels are also much lower.

\n\n

When the ETM truck mixer series is mounted on a fully electric chassis, the electric drum drive is powered by the chassis traction battery. The semitrailer also has an electric drum drive, available again in hybrid or fully electric versions, depending on the tractor unit. A combination involving a gas tractor unit has also been realised.
